On Saturday, April 18th, approximately 35 volunteers from Preferred Mutual, NY Pizzeria, and Stevie's Spiedies came together for the Adopt-A-Highway program. Volunteers spent nearly three hours cleaning-up a six-mile stretch of Route 8 in New Berlin, collecting more than 60 large bags of garbage from the sides of the road.

New York State's Adopt-A-Highway initiative began in 1990 as a response to the lack of federal funding available for roadside clean-up. Volunteers of this program "adopt" sections of highway and pledge to keep it free of litter and debris. The purpose of the Adopt-A-Highway project is to keep roads clean and beautiful despite lessening resources, and give communities a sense of pride in their highways.

In the fall of 2013, the three companies each committed to clean-up a section of Route 8 twice per year for two years. This clean-up marked the fourth time that the local businesses have joined forces for this common cause.

Preferred Mutual Insurance Company provides property and casualty insurance coverage to more than 235,000 individual and business customers through a network of more than 450 independent agents throughout New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The mutual insurance company, in business since 1896, employs more than 270 employees and is headquartered in New Berlin, New York. The company is rated "A" for excellent through A.M. Best.
