• Renter’s Insurance: 6 Good Reasons Why You Need It

by User Not Found | Aug 25, 2023

Your landlord’s insurance policy covers their property, but it leaves you and your belongings unprotected! Do you have the protection you need?

According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), 55% of U.S. renters, or 61 million people, currently have renter’s insurance policies, up from 40% three years ago.

    Why such a significant increase?

With increasing housing prices and rising mortgage interest rates, owning a home remains out of reach for many young people. Amid a volatile housing market, the renter’s insurance industry is expected to remain steady with the anticipation of gaining new customers throughout the coming year.

As a tenant, what is the risk if you do not have renter's insurance?

Renter’s insurance protects renters who experience unplanned personal property damage and certain liabilities. A landlord’s policy protects the structure of the building.

One of the most important risks you take when you rent without insurance is liability.  If someone is injured in your rented space – a friend, neighbor, or the pizza delivery driver – they could sue you.

6 Good Reasons To Buy a Renter’s Insurance Policy

It isn’t as expensive as you think.

Depending upon certain risk factors, such as the coverage you need, the type of coverage you choose, the amount of your deductible and where you live, your insurance policy could be pennies compared to what you could potentially lose if you didn’t have it!

It covers losses to your property.

A renter’s insurance policy protects against losses to your personal property, including clothes, jewelry, luggage, computers, furniture, and electronics.  Even if you don’t think you own much, it can quickly add up to a lot more than you realize—and a lot more than you’d want to pay to replace everything.

    Your landlord might require it.

A growing number of landlords require tenants to purchase their own renter’s insurance policies; whether to cover any gaps in coverage or because their insurance policy requires it, you’re a more attractive tenant when it comes to applications, too!

    It can provide liability coverage.

Liability coverage can be added to your renter’s insurance, providing protection if someone is injured while in your home.  This coverage pays any court judgments, as well as legal expenses, up to the policy limit you choose.

It covers your belongings when you travel.

Renter’s insurance covers your belongings, whether they are in your home, car, or with you while you travel.  Your possessions are covered from loss due to theft and other covered losses anywhere you travel in the world.  You’ll want to ask your independent agent for details on what constitutes “other covered losses.”

It may cover additional living expenses.

If your rental becomes uninhabitable due to one of the covered perils, your renter’s insurance policy may cover “additional living expenses,” including costs associated with living in a temporary space, food and more. Check with your policy to find out how long it will cover additional living expenses, and if it caps the amount the company will pay.

The bottom line is that without renter’s insurance, you’re at risk!

Talk with your independent agent today and ask about multi-policy discounts!  When you combine your auto insurance with renter’s insurance, you can save big!

At Preferred Mutual, we help you Live Assured by protecting what matters most to you!  So, go ahead and make the move.  We have you covered.
  • Cool Off – How to Save Money on Your Energy Bills During Summer!

by User Not Found | Aug 03, 2023

Summer brings with it sunshine, vacations, and outdoor fun. However, it also often means soaring temperatures and the need for constant air conditioning to stay comfortable. As the mercury rises, so do our energy bills. With a few simple adjustments, you can keep your home cool and comfortable and save you money during the sizzling summer months.

Here are a few ways to be more energy efficient during these summer months!

The truth is, you may be saving money on gas and mileage now, but what you’re saving in that category is likely being funneled to your energy bill. Help decrease your energy bills with these tips!

    Close Your Drapes.

The sun may help to decrease the use of lighting around your home, but direct sunlight streaming through your windows can heat up your home much faster than you’d be able to cool it down. Minimize the sun’s access by closing drapes, blinds or shades on south and west-facing sides of the house.

Blackout curtains are energy efficient, as they are made of materials with thermal insulation properties. They’ll help prevent sunlight from entering into the room, while also preventing heat from escaping during the winter months, helping you save on those energy bills!

    Save the Laundry for Later.

Activities that require water such as laundry, dishwashing, or showering can make your home feel warmer, because the air will feel humid, too! Save those for early morning or later in the evening, as the sun is not nearly as strong then.

Your air conditioning unit, if you have one, has a major responsibility to cool down your home, but air conditioners will be working overtime as they try to remove the humidity – jacking up that energy bill.

Make sure to turn heat-generating devices off, too, such as dishwashers and dryers, which can generate significant heat. Of course, stoves and cooktops are also top of the list, so when it’s time to cook, opt for firing up that barbeque instead of your range!

    Circulate Stagnant Air.

Monitoring the temperature both inside and out of your home can help you determine when it is time to open the windows, or plug in a fan. Ventilating your home, while a fresh breeze may feel nice, often allows humidity to come back into your home, so be mindful of the weather outside of your home.

Homes without air conditioners will likely keep windows open all summer long, unless you invest in a window A/C unit. Make sure to close any other window in the home if you choose to turn your window unit on, as you’ll waste a tremendous amount of energy otherwise.

Heat rises, so if you have any upper-story windows, open them to let the hot air out at night.

Remember, your home is your sanctuary. At Preferred Mutual, we know all too well that even with the perfect plan, unexpected events can occur. Get the extra protection you need at a cost you can afford. Live Assured with Equipment Breakdown and Service Line protection, which provides coverage for your devices and appliances from things like power surges, overheating, or mechanical failures. Extend your homeowners policy now, and save time and money later!

  • The Bridge Between Childhood and Independence: College Students and Your Insurance

by User Not Found | Jul 20, 2023

Sending a student away to college is the bridge between childhood and independence, and while it is a transition both parent and child must prepare for, Preferred Mutual has compiled a list of important issues to consider!

The moment’s come. You’re sending your child off to college, and you’re filled with pride, joy, anxiety and sentimentality. While it’s hard letting go, you’ve spent the past 18 years preparing for this moment, and because you’re a parent, you still want to make sure they’re protected as they sail off to pursue their dreams.

    Auto Insurance for College Students

You might think that if your student goes away to school and doesn’t take a car, you can drop them from your policy and save some extra money each month. However, Preferred Mutual recommends that you keep your college student listed on the policy for a number of reasons:

    • They will be fully protected if they come home for a weekend visit and wants to drive.
    • They will have insurance protection when they drive a friend’s car while away, and that vehicle isn’t adequately insured.
    • They will be fully protected if they are hit by a car while walking or riding a bike, or even while being a passenger in someone else’s vehicle.
    • Continuous insurance coverage can be beneficial when they get their own auto insurance policy.
    • Your child may help you qualify for discounts!

Make sure you inform your insurance agent that your student will be taking a family vehicle with them to college!

Home and Renters Insurance for College Students

Students’ possessions, like laptops, cell phones and printers, in a college residence hall are typically covered under their parents’ homeowners insurance policy, protecting valuables if the value of the damages or stolen items exceed your deductible.

It’s important that you connect with your insurance agent to ensure that your homeowners policy is adequate, as you might need additional coverage to insure expensive items like jewelry, musical instruments, or expensive sports equipment.

Adversely if your student moves out of the college residence hall and into off-campus housing, a new set of issues arises:

    • Co-signing leases: As a co-signer, parents could be held liable if anyone is hurt or injured at your child’s apartment. Make sure to add the location to your homeowners policy, ensuring proper liability coverage, and talk to your student about the risks involved when hosting parties and serving alcohol.
    • Purchasing a renter’s policy: A good renter’s insurance policy will provide protection in the event of a fire, pipe burst, or other covered loss that makes the apartment uninhabitable. Each roommate should purchase their own policy to ensure the proper coverage limits.

Having a child go off to school is a rollercoaster ride. There is so much to think about, not to mention the emotions each of you may feel. Get yourself and your student the peace of mind you deserve when it comes to auto, homeowners and renter’s protection. When life’s emergencies are handled by the best, you can worry about other things. That’s Living Assured. That’s Preferred Mutual.

  • Should I File a Property Damage Claim? Three Questions to Help You Decide!

by User Not Found | Jul 20, 2023

Preferred Mutual can help protect you and your family from the unexpected. If your home is damaged or your belongings are stolen, we can help cover repairs or replacement, temporary housing and more! What happens if there is an incident and you are not sure whether to file a claim? Here are three questions to help you determine what to do next.

Scenario: If a tree falls through your roof, you will likely file a property damage claim under your Homeowner’s policy. However, there are incidents that could occur that might make you question whether you should file a claim.

Is My Loss Covered Under My Policy?

Preferred Mutual provides several ways to file a claim, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You can report a claim at any time by:

    • Phone: Call 1.800.333.7642 and follow the prompts to report a claim
    • Email: claims.newlosses@preferredmutual.com
    • Online: Our secure online customer service center lets you enter a claim and check its status 24/7/365. To get started, register and/or log onto MYPreferred; or
    • By Agent: contact your independent agent to file a claim for you

However, before you file a claim, understanding what caused the damages to your home or belongings and whether that damage is covered is key to determining whether to file a property insurance claim. Statistics compiled by the Insurance Information Institute (III) show that wind and hail damage is the most common homeowners claim!

Your policy with Preferred Mutual sets forth what is covered and to what extent, so be sure to read your policy carefully or speak with your agent to go over your policy with you!

Here are other common causes of damages that are likely covered by your Homeowner’s Insurance policy:

    • Wind
    • Hail
    • Theft
    • Fire
    • Vandalism
    • Water damage (burst pipe*)

*Typically, water damage like floods, or normal wear and tear and earth movement are not covered by your standard policy.

    What’s My Deductible?

Although you may have a covered loss, the cost of the damages may not exceed your deductible, so filing a claim might not be the right choice. Minor damages, such as a few roof shingles that blew off in a windstorm, will often cost less to repair or replace than the total amount of your deductible. Generally, if you decide to file a claim that is paid, then your deductible will be subtracted from the total amount of your covered loss!

Are There Special Policy Limits That May Apply to My Loss?

Typically, unless you extend your standard policy to include valuables, payment for damage to certain types of property may have a special limit. Items such as jewelry, comic books, collectibles, or other valuables, may be limited. This is something to consider when thinking about whether to file a claim.

If You Decide to File a Claim with Preferred Mutual

If you decide to file a claim, using any of the options provided above (email, phone, online or by your agent), promptly notify Preferred Mutual that you are filing! Getting the process started as soon as you have had time to assess the damage, we can work quickly to resolve it! In the meantime, if you make temporary repairs, you should keep a copy of all receipts and provide them to your Claims Representative.

If you are confused about what is covered, be sure to ask your agent or Claims Representative to help you determine what the limits are on your policy, if any.

Preferred Mutual is always here for you with fast, helpful service when you need us most to Live Assured!

  • Safety Tips for Going Boating With Dogs

by User Not Found | Jun 23, 2023

Summer brings family fun at every turn, and who wouldn’t want their furry companion to be a part of it all? Whether you are boating on a river, a lake or an ocean, open water presents a number of risks, and that is particularly true for dogs.

Here’s how to ensure safety for everyone involved!

Having the opportunity to get out on the water is fun for the whole family – even your four-legged family members! Dogs and boats are a fun combination but bringing dogs on a boat requires special precautions. After all, while you can talk about boat safety in terms the other passengers can understand, you can’t simply use words to explain to your dog how to stay safe on your boat!

How To Safely Boat With Dogs

    1. Take your dog to the boat beforehand.
It’s best to get your dog acquainted with the boat ahead of the trip. Your pooch should practice getting on and off the boat, and sniff around without ever leaving the dock. Boats can also startle your pup when it starts up, so turning over the boat’s engine will also be important so your furry friend will be used to the sound and vibrations.

Once your dog is used to the boat while docked, take a few short trips with your dog. Make sure they’re wearing their doggy lifejacket! Just like humans, dogs get motion sickness, too!

    2. Understand your dog’s swimming level.
While most dogs are natural swimmers, you should know whether your pooch is frightened of the water, whether being near and around it, or in it.  If your dog knows how to swim and isn’t afraid of doing so, there should be high-level supervision regardless of their skills. With currents, tides, and other dangers beneath the water, it’s best to always keep your eyes on them!

    3. Make sure you're stocked with essential dog safety water supplies.
There are several pieces of equipment that will make your boating adventure a safe one and provide you with peace of mind. Here are a few Preferred Mutual suggestions:
    • Doggy lifejacket – A life vest is something that will immediately elevate the level of safety you’re taking when you bring your pup on a boating trip. Inexpensive, these items can mean the difference between fun and sorrow. Make sure to buy the right size and proper fit.
    • Water bowl – Dogs love to drink from the body of water you are cruising on, but to ensure proper hydration, fresh water in a bowl is the better choice!
    • Water ramp or dog boat ladder – Your pooch may have the agility to leap from the dock into the boat, but there’s an increased likelihood that your dog could hurt themselves. A ramp or boat ladder will help your dog safely get on and off the boat.
    • Sunscreen – For a dog? You bet! While their coats add a layer of protection like a human wearing clothing in the sun, dogs are prone to damage caused by UVA and UVB rays. However, human sunscreen and dog sunscreen are different, so for their health, be sure to purchase sunscreen made specifically for your pup!
    • Potty items – Make sure to keep pee pads and poo bags on board!
    • Carpet or mat – Dogs will need to secure their footing, and while humans can hold on in choppy weather, your dog only has four paws that need to be able to grip the deck!
    • First-aid kit and health records – You can never be too prepared for an incident! Bringing medications such as antibiotic ointments and seasickness medications for your pup is paramount!
    • No-pull harness – A harness that goes around his legs and torso is a much safer option compared to a leash attached to a collar.
     4. Check your state laws.

Even though there are no regulations regarding the way dogs or other animals are handled on boats, local and regional laws may have limits.

  • Hurricane Season: Prepare and Recover

by User Not Found | Jun 20, 2023

Hurricane season is upon us! June 1st kicks off the season, and even though it only seemed like we just started experiencing favorable weather, Preferred Mutual encourages you to focus on preparedness, planning and recovery in the event of a hurricane.

Believe it or not, hurricane season is here, and those ferocious storm systems can cause widespread devastation during and after it occurs. Forming over ocean water and often moving fast toward land, they threaten our summers with high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, and even tornadoes.

These effects can injure or kill people, disrupts all sorts of things like transportation and communication, and can pollute your drinking water! Be better prepared for this hurricane season by following Preferred Mutual’s guide to Prepare, Survive, Be Safe.

    Now/Prepare

    • Sign up for all local alerts and warnings, and monitor your local news and weather reports.
    • Prepare to evacuate by testing your emergency communication plan(s), especially your immediate family plan, learning evacuation routes, having a place to stay, and having a bag already packed to grab quickly.
    • Stock emergency supplies. This should include 3 days of drinking water per person, as well as non-perishable food items, batteries and flashlight, cell phone chargers, and a radio to keep yourself up to date on the storm.
    • Protect your property by installing sewer backflow valves, anchoring fuel tanks, putting patio furniture and other items away, and catalog belongings. Make sure you review your homeowners’ insurance policy with your Preferred Mutual agent.
    • Collect and safeguard critical financial, medical, educational, and legal documents and records.

    During/Survive

    • Follow guidance from local authorities.
    • If advised to evacuate, grab your packed bag and leave immediately.
    • For protection from high winds, stay away from windows and seek shelter on the lowest level in an interior room.
    • Move to higher ground if there is flooding or a flood warning.
    • Turn Around, Don’t Drown ® Never walk or drive on flooded roads or through water.
    • Call 9-1-1 if you are in life-threatening danger.

    After/Be Safe

    • Return to the area only after authorities say it is safe to do so. Do not enter damaged buildings until they are inspected by qualified professionals.
    • Look out for still flooded areas, downed or unstable trees, poles, and powerlines.
    • Do not remove heavy debris by yourself. Wear gloves and sturdy, thick-soled shoes to protect your hands and feet from electrical current in the water.
    • Do not drink the tap water unless authorities have deemed it safe.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issues alerts when weather conditions make hurricanes more likely. Smart phones also push emergency service messages through, even when you put your phone on “Do not disturb.” Know when to take action, and always have a plan! Check out FEMA for more information on how you and your family can prepare for hurricane season.

  • Preventing Ice Dams

    by Karen Ryan | Feb 06, 2023

    What is an Ice Dam?

Ice dams are the result of heat escaping your home through the attic or ceiling and melting the snow on your roof. This causes water to run down your roof and re-freeze at the edge where it is colder. As ice builds-up, it causes an “ice dam” which blocks water from draining off your roof.

    The Danger of Ice Dams

When water runs off your roof and becomes trapped by an ice dam, it backs up on the roof, pools, freezes and expands often forcing its way under the shingles. As the process of thawing and re-freezing continues throughout the warmth of winter days and the cold of winter nights, water is forced into the attic, onto ceilings and down inside walls often causing extensive damage and costly repairs. Such damage can impact the underlying support structure to the roof, cause wood to rot, moldy insulation, destroyed drywall, electrical damage, and stained or ruined flooring.

    Prevent Ice Dams from Developing

Inspect Your Homes Insulation & Stop Air Leaks

Insufficient insulation and air leaks are the primary reason for the formation of ice dams. The best way to prevent ice dams is to maintain a cold roof. Use sufficient insulation in the attic to keep the warm inside air from leaking into the attic and warming the roof. Building codes for insulation R-values vary from region to region. Homeowners should check the amount of fiberglass or cellulose insulation recommended according to the building codes in their community, and ensure that any cut-out areas around pipes, vents and ceiling fixtures are sealed with foam or caulk to prevent air leaks. Maintaining a cool, well-ventilated attic space that will not allow the roof to warm is also a good way to prevent the formation of ice dams.

Remove the Snow from Your Roof

Perhaps the most effective way to prevent the formation of ice dams is to remove any accumulation after each heavy snowfall. If your home has a low-sloped roof, a heavy-duty broom can be used to push the snow off your roof. If your house has a steep slope, you might want to use a roof rake instead (which is a scraper designed specifically to remove snow from your roof).

Consider Installing a Metal Roof in the Future

While an update like this might not initially be in the home-improvement budget, installing a metal roof on a home in an area prone to heavy snowfall could save you money and hassle in the long term. While ice can still form on a metal roof, the material will not allow water to seep into your home and will protect your insulation and ceiling from rot and mold.

The following sources should be checked for heat loss into the attic

    • Ceiling light fixtures
    • All plumbing and heating penetrations
    • Attic hatches and pull-down stairs
    • Drop-ceilings over bathtubs, closets and cabinets, and kitchen soffits
    • Where walls are not completely sealed (attic stairway, interior partition walls, etc.)
    • Electrical and phone cables, electrical boxes, and fan housings, such as exhaust fans
    • Skylights

What to do if you do get an Ice Dam

    • If you see water staining a wall or ceiling, act quickly to avoid extensive damage
    • Hire a contractor to carefully remove the snow from the roof above the ice dam and create a groove in the ice dam to allow the pooling water to drain
    • Do not chop or chip away at the ice dam as the roof shingles can be damaged
    • Do not use salt or calcium chloride to melt the snow of the roof as these chemicals are very corrosive.

Take preventative measures to ensure that your home's infrastructure is protected from ice dams. The investment you make in your home, as well as your family’s safety, security, and peace of mind will enable you to Live Assured.

  • Driving in Freezing Rain

    by Karen Ryan | Jan 23, 2023

Driving in sleet or freezing rain can be dangerous. Being prepared is your best weapon of defense!

When droplets freeze on contact with roads, wind shields and sidewalks, this can become winter’s most treacherous condition.

What is sleet and freezing rain?

Freezing rain and sleet begins as falling snow. As it passes through a layer of warmer air, the snowflakes melt and turn to rain. As the droplets fall, they pass through a layer of cold air (below 32° degrees). If it is a thin layer of cold air, then freezing rain will result as the droplets did not have enough time to freeze. If the layer of cold air is deep, the droplets freeze before hitting a surface resulting in sleet. These supercooled drops strike a cold surface, like cars and roads turning surfaces shiny and slick. Ice storms can be the most devastating and unpredictable of winter weather conditions and are often the cause of automobile accidents, power outages and personal injury.

Do not drive if you do not have to.

If you are aware of freezing rain conditions, stay home. Even with the reduction of speed, slick conditions like freezing rain just means that you will slide slower across the ice-coated roads.

Weather and road conditions can change while you are driving.

Freezing rain and sleet will quickly coat your car with a layer of ice. If freezing rain begins to fall and you must drive in it, it is best to keep your car as warm as possible so that you minimize the chance of ice forming on windows and compromise visibility.

Should sleet and freezing rain begin while you are driving, the best thing to do is to find a safe location off the highway or busy road and wait for the storm to pass. Do not pull over to the side of the road as other cars may not see you until they are close enough to hit their brakes and possibly slide into you.

Crank up your windshield defroster and make sure your wipers are ready.

Visibility tends to be the worst in icy conditions. Make sure your wipers are in the best possible condition. If they streak, skip, or leave patches you cannot see through, replace them as soon as possible.

Know where ice is most likely to form first so you can take extra caution when approaching them.

Areas like bridges and overpasses, low lying areas, areas in shadow, higher elevations, and roads near bodies of water are all the first places ice will appear. When driving through these areas, be cautious and take your time.

Contrary to popular belief, four-wheel drive vehicles do not make a difference in sleet or freezing rain.

When there is ice on the road, there is very little, if any, friction, or resistance to keep the tires where you want them. Ice does not care whether you are a good driver, have the best tires, or drive the most winterized vehicle ever to hit the road. The best defense for ice is to stay off the road.

Stay alert – it can save your life.

Driving in freezing rain demands the utmost concentration. Drive with limited distractions and focus on the road and those around you.

Driving in sleet or freezing rain is obviously dangerous but being prepared is your best weapon of defense! Live assured with these tips and with Preferred Mutual!

  • Severe Weather Means It’s Time To Check Your Insurance Policies

by User Not Found | Sep 25, 2022

The weather forecast – record-breaking cold temperatures, ice, slush, arctic winds, and plenty of snow. Results from such extreme weather can be devastating. Are you ready in the event of a devastating event?

While you can’t control the path of the storm, you can control the outcome by making sure you’re properly protected in the event of a weather-related incident. That means it is time to review your Homeowner’s Insurance policy! Here are three questions you need to ask yourself and your agent!

Does your current coverage fully respond to weather issues?

Most Homeowner's Insurance policies provide coverage for the structure of your home against named perils, or certain catastrophes (such as fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, or other disasters specifically noted in your Homeowner’s Insurance policy).

A notable coverage exclusion of Homeowner's Insurance policies are floods and earthquakes; insurance to protect against these types of losses almost always is purchased under a separate policy.

    Coverage for your Personal Belongings

Your Homeowner’s Insurance policy will also provide basic coverage to protect the contents of your home. According to the Insurance Information Institute, “most companies provide coverage for 50% to 70% of the amount of insurance you have on the structure of your home.”

You can extend the amount of that coverage in the event you need additional protection by adding a Valuable Possessions Endorsement to your Homeowner's policy.

Customized Homeowners Insurance to Fit Your Needs

While all Preferred Mutual Homeowner’s Insurance policies are specific to your individual property and coverage wants and needs, we also have high-value Homeowner’s Insurance policies, as well as Mobile Home Insurance policies designed to be more customized out of the box to fit your unique needs - and give you peace of mind.

How quickly will your insurance company respond in extreme weather?

The truest test of any insurance company is how it responds when you have a claim. Preferred Mutual provides 24/7 claim service, by providing you several ways to file a claim:

    • Phone: Call 1.800.333.7642 and follow the prompts to report a claim
    • Email: Claims.newlosses@preferredmutual.com
    • Online: Our secure online customer service center lets you enter a claim and check its status 24/7/365. To get started, register and/or log onto MYPreferred; or

  • A Checklist for End-Of-Summer Home Maintenance

by User Not Found | Sep 11, 2022

For many homeowners, spring is a busy time of year to tend to the maintenance and upkeep tasks that have been set aside for “another day.”  Fall is just as critical a season for preparing your home to withstand the potentially harsh winter weather and frigid temperatures that may await you!

By making maintenance part of your annual fall routine, you’ll be identifying potential issues before they even arise, and help prepare your home and property for what Mother Nature has to offer!

Here are some tips from our Claims team to help you prepare for the coming change in seasons:

    Prevent Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes cause billions of dollars’ worth of damage every year, with the average claim around $18,000 for one single home. To protect yourself, insulate water pipes in areas exposed to freezing temperatures using pipe sleeves, heat tape, or similar materials.

If you’re on a budget, you can even use 1/4” of newspaper to provide some insulation. However, it’s important to note that newspaper insulation won’t provide the same level of protection during frequent or prolonged sub-freezing temperatures!

    Replace Air Filters

Easy and affordable, replacing your own air filters is extremely important to prolonging the engine life of your air conditioning system!  If you’re unsure of the type of filter size and quality is necessary for your HVAC system, get your unit serviced by a licensed HVAC maintenance company. A professional will help to improve the quality of the air throughout your home, which will help keep you and your family healthy!

Test Your Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors.

More than three people per hour become sick from carbon monoxide poisoning, which kills hundreds of people every year in the United States alone. Test your detector to make sure it still works! If yours is battery-operated, replace the battery every six months!

Your smoke detector is another life-saving feature of your home, but ensuring it still works is the priority all year round. Check all the smoke detectors in your home each month and replace all batteries every 3-6 months. We encourage a smoke detector on each floor of your home, and in each bedroom or sleeping area!

    Other Life-Saving Tips for Fall

    • Check gutters for damage and confirm they’re securely attached to the house.
    • Clean gutters and downspouts to keep debris from accumulating. This is especially important during the fall season when leaves may collect in gutters.
    • Check and repair caulking around doors and windows that show signs of deterioration.
    • Have your chimney cleaned and maintained by a professional.
    • Clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct and space under and behind the dryer. Remove lint and dust that may have accumulated inside the dryer in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation.
    • Check electrical outlets for loose-fitting plugs or receptacles. Be sure not to overload electrical outlets.
    • Keep a multi-purpose fire extinguisher accessible. Confirm that it is fully charged and ready for operation.

These steps can help protect your home and property from expensive damage! If you have Preferred Mutual, though, you can Live Assured that when you need us, we’ll be there for you – any time, any season!

  • Seasonal Home Maintenance Tips

    by System | Sep 04, 2022

Fall is an appropriate time of year for some essential home maintenance. As the days get shorter and the leaves begin to change and fall from the trees, this is when we can make use of the next few months to prepare for the snow, ice, and bitter cold that comes with winter in the Northeast.

Take the time this fall to boost energy efficiency throughout your home and prevent damage from winter storms with proper outside maintenance!

    Outdoor Care

Care for trees and shrubs.  If you have trees on your property, consider hiring an arborist to care for them – these pros can spot signs of poor health early on to prevent tree loss, and know how to prune properly to avoid falling limbs in winter storms!

Rake lawn debris.  Leaves might look beautiful falling from the trees and blanketing the ground, but cleaning them up before the heavy snow will help your lawn come back to life in the spring.

Clean gutters and downspouts.  Once most of the leaves have fallen, cleaning out your gutters and downspouts can help to eliminate water damage to your roof and siding.  Leaving clogged gutters during rainstorms can cause water to pool!

Make essential exterior repairs.  Take a walk around your property, looking for signs of damage to the roof, siding and foundation, as well as driveways and stairways.  If you spot anything that needs repair, schedule it before winter weather arrives!

Shut off exterior faucets and store hoses.  In a few months, remember to protect your pipes from freezing temperatures by shutting off water to exterior faucets before the weather dips below freezing!  Drain the hoses and store them indoors.

    Indoor Care

Check equipment and devices.  Be sure to change the air filter in your furnace and check its efficiency before the cold weather begins. Call in an HVAC contractor to test the heating output and give the system a tune-up. Stock up on several air filters for the winter, and change them every month.  If you don't have a programmable thermostat, purchase one for the system to help lower your energy costs.

Add weather-stripping.  Weather-stripping applied around the frames of windows and doors help to boost winter warmth and cut energy costs.  Add door sweeps to the base of drafty doors to keep heat in and cold air out.

Check the fireplace and chimney. Most chimney sweeps recommend an annual sweeping, but depending on how often you use the fireplace, you might be able to wait on a full sweep.  However, if you will be using the fireplace often, call a chimney sweep for an inspection.

Remember to have your older, seasoned firewood ready for use after sitting for the spring and summer. It's recommended to keep the firewood at least 30 feet from the house and covered. Seasoned wood is best for fires, as it burns cleaner and longer. Wood kept near or against your house is an invitation as bugs can find a new place to nest under your shingles, in the mulch that abuts your house,

Deep-clean the kitchen. Take a day to tackle some of the more labor-intensive cleaning tasks, and keep your kitchen working efficiently and looking great:

    • Degrease the range hood and filter
    • Clean the oven
    • Vacuum the refrigerator coils
    • Scrub tile grout
    • Clean light fixtures
    • Wash the walls and backsplash
    • Wash the garbage can and recycling bins
    • Clean small appliances

It’s never too early to start getting your home ready for winter.  Cold weather, snow and ice can be really hard on your house. It’s important to be proactive about taking care of your home before the winter weather gets too brutal!  That’s living assured

  • Commercial Umbrella Insurance: Is it Right for Your Business?

    by System | Aug 28, 2022

Your current insurance will protect your company against routine misfortunes – but are you getting the full protection you need?

Preferred Mutual understands that you have enough to worry about as a business owner.  A commercial umbrella insurance policy protects you against excess liability judgments for loss, injury or even death.  Do any of the situations below sound like they could happen to you?

    • A tenant suffered burns to 60% of his body when the gas fireplace exploded in the apartment he leased from the defendants.  Plaintiff Verdict: $3,290,101
    • Plaintiff electrician came into contact with a live wire at a construction site and suffered traumatic brain injury, determined to be the result of the electrical contractor's negligence.  Settlement: $2,900,000
    • An 11-year old died from an auto accident at a controlled intersection going into a neighborhood constructed by the defendant development company.  Plaintiff Verdict:$10,000,000
    • Defendant pharmacy incorrectly filled a low-dose steroid prescription with a higher dose, resulting in diabetes, glaucoma and other serious injuries to a 43-year old.  Plaintiff Verdict:  $2,700,000
    • A deliveryman suffered herniated discs requiring surgery and continuing medical treatment when he slipped and fell down the stairs of the defendant restaurant.  Plaintiff Verdict:  $1,763,000

Perhaps these scenarios seem far-fetched, but Preferred Mutual encourages you to take time to determine what types of claims are made in your industry and what awards are generally given in a lawsuit.  In many cases, an umbrella policy helps manage the higher-end damage awards and protects the assets and financial solvency of your business in the event of a large claim and award.

Don’t get caught in the rain!

Talk with your Preferred Mutual independent agent about Commercial Umbrella Insurance, and the liability and insurance needs of your business, so you can determine what the right coverage is for you and your business.

  • Your Auto Insurance and Rate Changes

by User Not Found | Sep 28, 2021

At Preferred Mutual, our policyholders receive transparent and honest communication regarding why your auto insurance rate may change. Here are five of the most common reasons!

It may seem like insurance carriers just arbitrarily raise and lower the price of your auto insurance, but there are real reasons the price fluctuates! Here are the most common reasons:

    1. Driving record: At-risk drivers are defined as insureds who have had incidents on record such as accidents (regardless of fault), speeding violations, reckless driving, and driving while intoxicated or under the influence. Those incidents may influence your premium payment, but as time goes on, past claims on your record will decrease if you keep losses to a minimum!
    2. Credit score: We don’t love it, but your credit score impacts your personal insurance score. In combination with other risk factors, insurance companies use your credit score to help determine your home and auto rates as a larger commitment to covering more people and promoting equitable rates for every customer.
    3. How often you drive: It’s a simple concept: the more you drive, the more opportunity there is to get into an accident. Your insurance agent will ask you of your lifestyle when quoting with insurance companies because you may actually be eligible for lower rates if you’re not driving far and long every day!
    4. The type of car you drive: Well, the type of car you drive will absolutely influence your premium. New cars cost more to repair after an accident, and they are also at higher risk of break-ins or theft. Your dream car is still absolutely in your reach, but be sure to speak to your agent about how that car might change your rate. Keep in mind luxury cars aren’t the only ones that are at a high-risk of theft. Thieves target cars with high-demand parts, too.
    5. Adding a driver to your policy: In addition to all of the factors above, an additional driver on your policy will ultimately impact your rate. Adding a teenager, for instance, can generally bump up your rate due to the high-risk associated with new drivers.

Worried about insurance your teen driver? We offer Good Student Discounts, multicar discounts, and discounts when you bundle your auto and home insurance with Preferred Mutual!

  • How to Keep Mice Out of Your Car

by User Not Found | Sep 16, 2021

Sounds strange for a mouse to find shelter under your engine hood or in your dashboard, but as the weather cools, rodents seek that warmth and protection. Here are some tips on how to keep mice and other pests out of your vehicle!

Their choice of shelter is not just a nuisance, they could severely damage the engine, and chew belts and wires. With that, the result can cause serious malfunctions, and even car fires. A nest located in a fan or intake manifold can absolutely ignite, as the nests are made of natural materials such as dried leaves and sticks. Frayed wires could cause fires, too.

    Here are a few tips:

It’s way more common than you think! Don’t assume that because you drive your car all the time that your vehicle is safe from animal damage. Just as people seek shelter during storms, so do these animals. The National Fire Protection Association warns almost 2/3 of vehicle fires are caused by faulty electrical or mechanical systems often brough on by animal damage!

Ask your mechanic or technician to check under the hood during routine service such as oil changes or tire rotations.

Park under shelter! If you have a garage or vehicle-appropriate shelter, use it! Although squirrels, mice and other small animals flourish in rural areas, they are common everywhere. Save yourself time and potential money for vehicle repairs by finding appropriate shelter.

Save yourself time and potential money for vehicle repairs by finding appropriate shelter.

Honk to scare away mice in the car! Honk your horn before you even start the engine. If your key fob has that function, you can it from a distance. Loud noises will frighten animals from the vehicle. Wait a few moments after you sound the horn before you start the car.

Small animals wedge themselves into tiny spaces. Honk your car horn and provide some time to allow them to escape.

Use deterrents! There are multiple deterrents you could deploy to help keep rodents out of your car:

    • Electronic repellent: A cordless device can be placed within your car and emits a decibel tone that hurt mice and other pests, but are inaudible to humans.
    • Scent replants: Cedar wood, peppermint oil, or cayenne pepper around your car. Mice naturally avoid these and are more humane alternative than using poisons.
    • Traps: A quick and clean way to keep mice from invading your vehicle is to place traps on the tops of your tires as this is mostly likely their point of entry!

Check your car and surroundings! Regularly check your car. You can easily remove nests. Listen to rattles, too.

Clean up after any signs of mice! The most important thing to remember about mouse nests is to make sure you get rid of them the moment you see them. Mice droppings and urine can be infected, which can cause humans to contract when breathed in.

While wearing rubber gloves, mix household bleach with water and spray the affected areas until wet. Let it sit for a few minutes and wipe with a paper towel. Sponge the areas with bleach solution. Throw all of your cleaning materials in a plastic bag to dispose of them, and then wash your hands thoroughly with soap after removing the gloves.

Damage to your car by these pests can be significant. Your car insurance policy with Preferred Mutual can ensure that if a mouse gets the better of you, you’re protected! Talk to your independent agent today and make sure you’re getting the best possible coverage at a price you can afford!

  • The Aftermath of a Car Accident: Is My Vehicle Drivable?

by User Not Found | Jun 03, 2021

While the topic is complicated and based on the variables of the accident, Preferred Mutual’s Auto Claims Team has put together a list of significant signs of damage to help you make informed decisions about whether you should drive your car after an accident or get it to an autobody shop immediately!

At Preferred Mutual, we recognize how stressful a car accident can be for everyone involved, especially if there is damage to your vehicle. Even if no one is injured, one of the main concerns that many people have after a car wreck is whether or not their vehicle is drivable or if a towing service will be needed.

As a driver, it will be your responsibility to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive, but more importantly, if the car is in need of repair, your car insurance carrier may not cover any of the damage if you get in another accident before you get the original damage fixed.

Here’s a list of ways to determine whether or not you should drive your vehicle yourself to either a repair shop or home.

    IS MY VEHICLE DRIVABLE??

    Are any fluids leaking?

    1. YES - Call for a tow (driving without coolant can cause irreparable engine damage)
    2. NO - Proceed to #2.

Are all the wheels pointing in the correct direction?

    1. NO - Call for a tow (suspension damage has occurred, driving the vehicle is not safe)
    2. YES - All four wheels appear to be aligned – Proceed to #3.

    Did any airbags deploy?

    1. YES - Call for a tow (driving a vehicle with a deployed airbag is not safe).
    2. NO - Proceed to #4.

Do all the doors/hood open and close freely and without excessive force?

    1. NO - Call for a tow (doors need to function properly so occupants can exit the vehicle if needed. Damaged/unlatched hoods may pop open at speed).
    2. YES - Proceed to #5.

Are the headlights and mirrors intact/functioning properly?

    1. YES - The vehicle is likely drivable, using caution, drive the vehicle to the nearest service center for further evaluation.
    2. NO - Use common sense – if headlights/mirrors are broken at night in a remote location, you should call for a tow. If you have a broken headlight/mirror, and there is ample daylight, and/or you are near a service center, you can likely drive the vehicle.

IF YOU DETERMINE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVABLE, BE CAUTIOUS, TURN OFF THE RADIO, AND USE YOUR SENSES TO DETERMINE IF ALL SYSTEMS ARE OPERATING PROPERLY.

    1. Smell - Notice any unfamiliar/burning scents?
    2. Feel - Does the vehicle “feel” like it is driving properly?
    3. Hearing - Is the vehicle making any unfamiliar noises?
    4. Sight - Keep an eye on all gauges (engine temperature, oil pressure, check engine light, etc.)

Making the decision to drive after an accident is an important one. If there is any doubt, have your car towed to a body shop for the safety of yourself, passengers, and other drivers on the road. Your car insurance carrier may even cover the cost of the tow and rental!

Did you know that Preferred Mutual has a Direct Repair Shop Program in New York?

That’s right! Your car insurance policy with Preferred Mutual is more than a document to keep in your glove compartment – It means you will have access to guaranteed I-CAR Gold Certified repair shops to maximize convenience and high-quality service to save you time and give you peace of mind!

  • Hurricane Season: Flood Facts While On The Road

by User Not Found | Jun 01, 2021

Hurricane season is here, which means the threat of high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, and even tornadoes.

Preferred Mutual’s Auto Claims Team put together an unbeatable list of flood facts to help you navigate the season.

Often, hurricane season disrupts many things like transportation and communication, making traveling by automobile almost mission impossible. Here are a few facts as you prepare for the summer ahead:

    • If you can find a detour around standing water - TAKE IT.
    • Watch other vehicles for an indicator of how deep it is.
    • If the water level is above the center of a vehicle’s wheel – don’t attempt to drive through.
    • Water can be pulled in from your exhaust, or worse, water can get into your engine from the air intake. This would cause your vehicle to stall and a lot of work to get your engine back into working order. Once it’s flooded,  it would need to be stripped down as internal bits and pieces [plugs or injectors] would have to be removed to get the water out of the engine.
    • If you must drive through, find the shallowest section of water.
    • Do not drive in water that is moving or looks to be deeper than 4 inches.
    • 6 inches of water is enough to reach the bottom of most private passenger cars.
    • If you must drive through water, drive slow and steady.
    • A lot of vehicles will start to float in as little as one foot of water. Once the wheels lose grip on the road, you lose control of the vehicle.
    • Vehicles can be swept away in as little as two feet of water, even with all-wheel drive.
    • Wait your turn!
    • You want to go one at a time, and especially want to avoid driving through the water against approaching vehicles. The momentum of the water can overtake either vehicle.
    • Test your brakes!
    • After driving through a flooded section of the roadway, it is a good idea to find a safe spot to test your brakes. Drive slowly (10-15 mph) and gently apply the brakes while moving.

Whether you’re a professional driver or new behind the wheel, you have a truck, or coupe, the facts remain the same: severe weather can cause significant damage to your vehicle. That’s why Preferred Mutual keeps a team ready to assist you if the weather gets the better hand. • Ensure a Solid Foundation: Contractor Insurance

by User Not Found | Mar 23, 2021

Contractors face unique and often dangerous risks every day on the job site, and accidents can happen in a split second. Whether you’re an electrical, excavation, or plumbing and HVAC contractor, Preferred Mutual is there for you, no matter what.

Studies show that nearly 50% of small businesses are the target of civil lawsuits! Liability claims can happen to your contractor business, and every business faces potential risks and threats that could cause serious financial losses! Here are two of the largest liability risks associated with the contractor industry.

    Jobsite Risks

Maintaining strict control over building site operations is imperative and putting effective control mechanisms in place is a must. However, the unexpected can happen where one of your employees inadvertently damages the client’s property, such as scaffolding collapses onto a garden water feature. The homeowner could claim this damage with their homeowner insurance provider, but Preferred Mutual will protect your bottom line with Contractor Liability Insurance, which is included in your insurance package!

    Product Risks

Just imagine all the accidents that could happen while transporting, carrying, and installing new materials that have yet to be purchased by the customer; who would pay for a broken countertop or heating unit? Installation floaters ensure that your paycheck for a completed project doesn’t turn into a payment for damaged materials that you had to replace. We’re here for you! While installation floaters are often categorized as an additional option to your basic policy, going without this insurance coverage is a risky choice for a contractor.

Commercial insurance is available for a variety of contractors, including:

  • The Big Thaw: A Home Maintenance List

by User Not Found | Mar 11, 2021

Nothing batters your home like a heavy-snow winter. If your area took a snowy beating, here are some tips to help undo winter’s damage!

With many areas in the Northeast suffering a hard-hitting, cold, windy, and snowy winter, the spring thaw is certainly welcomed. However, with spring on its way, Preferred Mutual encourages you to take serious stock of the damaging nature has wrought.

    Gutters

Dead leaves and winter debris can be clogging your gutters. All drainage needs to be secured so that when the spring showers come, you’re properly draining the rain away from your home and prevent moisture damage and potential flooding. With any luck, you’ll need some good, old-fashioned elbow grease, a ladder, and hand tools but that could change quickly if you choose to ignore your gutters or put it off until next year.

    Decks and Patios

Heavy snowfalls give outdoor decks and patios a good beating. If you’ve been shoveling them often, that’s, even more, wear and tear. The surface can get a lot of scraping damage, preventing sealants from doing their jobs in the coming months. It’s also worth assessing to see if you should get a new coat of paint or sealant on the deck to protect the wood as long as you can.

Your beautiful stone patio has the potential to crack during the freeze/thaw cycle, too. From your stones heaving from settling joint sand underneath to the kind of bulk salt you use, you could potentially impact the integrity of the stones. To prevent damage, preventative measures such as environmentally friendly salts and leveling stones before winter will help to prolong the life of your patio.

    Roofs

This is an obvious one, and nothing is more important in the battle between protection and nature than a secured roof.

Inspecting your roof after the snow has melted is such an important task during the spring thaw. Check to ensure all shingles are still in place, inspect the areas with sealant around vents, chimneys, skylights, etc. If winter left its mark, spring is a great time to replace your roof, and protect your investment.

    Drains

Wherever water runs nearby, whether, on your property or adjacent to your curb, you’ll want to inspect to make sure drains are allowing any run-off or melt-water to go where it needs to go. Water pooling can lead to structural damage and serious underground erosion, but it’s also where you’ll find bugs like mosquitos breeding.

Standing water is a huge breeding ground for spring and summertime insects, and those insects can carry illnesses. Protect your structure and loved ones by preventing ground erosion and enjoy your home the way you intended to!

Maintenance is good homeownership. Each change in the season requires responsibility to ensure the integrity of your home. Don’t wait until these fixes “need” doing, because, by that time, it could be too late. Protect your home now and save yourself the headache later.

Your home may be the biggest investment you ever make. Get protection that covers your property and possessions, provides living expenses in case of an emergency, and keeps you and your family safe from personal liability. Every one of our homeowner's policies is customized to meet your needs and your budget. Contact a Preferred Mutual agent today and discover how you can Live Assured.
